Why the directory wins the citation
A directory profile is structured, uniform across thousands of physicians, and updated by a third party. An answer engine can read a specialty, a credential, an address, and an accepting-new-patients flag from it without parsing prose. A practice website usually states the same facts in sentences, in a layout unique to that site.
The practice site still matters. It is the source the directory record is checked against, and the place a patient lands once the name has been named.
Accuracy is the whole job
A stale suite number, a former hospital affiliation, or a credential written three ways across four profiles produces a hedged answer or no answer. Keeping the listing layer current is unglamorous and it is the layer with the most direct line to being cited.
